Read With Me Wednesday: Room on the Broom

Vroom! Zoom! The carefree witch and her cat are flying through the wind on a broomstick – but lots of fuzzy friends would love to share their broom. “Is there room on the broom?” they cry. “Yes”, says the big-hearted witch! What with a dog, a frog, a bird, a cat, one magical cauldron and one happy witch on board, there’s lots of fun and laughter on the broom – until it snaps in two! Oh no! They all land in a bog, and a hungry dragon appears! What now? This magically energetic rhyming tale of friendship and sharing is a sweetly spooky treat. (Scholastic.com)

We’ve been reading Halloween/Fall books like cRaZY!  This is one of mine and my daughter’s favorites (read:  We have read this almost every day, if she gets to choose it’s what she chooses, and I don’t mind reading it a gazillion times).

Yesterday after we read Room on the Broom, we did two things to go along with the book.

We made some Sludge Monster Cookies aka No Bake Cookies.  At the end of the story a "tall, dark, and sticky” monster saves the witch from the dragon.  We were going to decorate them to look like monsters, but naptime was more important!

Sludge Monster Cookies

  • 2 cups sugar image
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 stick butter or margarine (1/2 cup)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 3 cups oatmeal
  • Waxed paper
Directions

In a heavy saucepan mix  the sugar, cocoa, butter, salt and milk over medium heat.  Stir constantly so it doesn’t burn! Bring to a boil and let boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and quickly add peanut butter stir until just combined, then stir in vanilla and oatmeal. On a sheet of waxed paper, drop mixture by the teaspoonfuls.  Cookies will harden when cool.  (If you can wait that long!)

After naptime we colored this Room on the Broom Coloring Page from scholastic.com, and ate our Sludge Monster Cookies.  image

If we get a chance we are going to make these witch sack puppets.
